Session 3: Law and the Arts
David Fewer

David Fewer Canada's intellectual property laws support you as artists and creators. Taking advantage of that support starts with understanding your rights and the rights of your customers and distributors, and using contracts that achieve your goals. This presentation will address:

  • How copyright law's rules of ownership protect creators.
  • Neighbouring rights: how distributors can sometimes own their own piece of your work.
  • Users' rights - the limits of copyright.
  • Moral rights - recognizing creators' rights.
  • Assigning copyright.
  • Licensing 101.
  • Giving it all away while keeping it too: Creative Commons and alternative licenses.
  • Logos, branding, and trade-marks.
